C & C Generals 2 Going Free To Play But Will Remain AAA

+

During their presentation today at Gamescom EA announced its upcoming real time strategy game Command and Conquer Generals 2 will be free to play.

C &C Generals 2 will become a part of EA’s new online platform dubbed “Command & Conquer”. They describe this free to play platform as a client based game, and plan to deliver multiple free to play C & C games.

It’s not very clear how EA plans to monetize this free to play model, but seem pretty excited about the transition. Jon Van Caneghem, general manager at EA, spoke to WebProNews about the changes.

“We are thrilled about this opportunity to transform Command & Conquer into a premier online experience,” he said. “For nearly two decades, this franchise has existed as something you buy; now we are creating a destination where our fans will be able to access the entire Command and Conquer universe, starting with Generals and continuing with Red Alert, Tiberium, and beyond.”

Fans of the series need not worry about quality. EA will not be sacrificing any quality to be able to use the free to play model.

“With Frostbite 2, we are able to keep an emphasis on the AAA quality our consumers expect while staying true to the RTS gameplay they know and love – all available online for free,” he said.
