Square Enix, in the face of un-sourced rumors, confirmed today that Final Fantasy Versus XIII is, in fact, still in production.
President and CEO Yoichi Wada laughed off the rumors via Twitter just last night. However, his tweet was in Japanese. A rough translation by Kotaku revealed the truth about Versus.
“There’s someone making a false rumor that Versus was cancelled. Haha… just a minute ago, the regular Versus meeting ended,” Wada said. “If you saw the presentation of the city it’d knock you off your feet lol.”
Rumors of the game’s quiet cancellation surfaced last week when Kotaku cited un-named sources who claimed the game was cancelled several weeks prior, but Square Enix decided to not make any sort of public announcement. This followed roughly 6 years of little to no publicity for Versus as well as no release time-table.
Versus will be one of three Final Fantasy XIII installments. The story is based around a young king who has promised to defend the last crystal from the evil lurking outside his kingdom. A battle between modern and ancient technology ensues as the king fights to save the day.
There is still barely any information available to the public about Final Fantasy Versus XIII, including any hint at a release date.
