Coming up this weekend in Las Vega Nevada is the fighting game tournament known as Evolution 2012. Evolution is the biggest fighting game event held in North America, spanning three days and boasting a lineup this year of 6 games including Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Street Fighter x Tekken, Soul Calibur 5, and King of Fighters 13. Up for grabs is a prize pool of a hefty $100,000 total thanks to record donations from gaming companies.
Typically, this event has the biggest turnout of any American major tournament, and this year will be no exception; Evo 2012 has filled up Caeser’s palace in Las Vegas Nevada with literally thousands of players from all across the world. It will be streamed over a three day period with quality resolution provided by the likes of IPLAYWINNER and Team Spooky. There will be a premium 720p stream available for those who can afford it. All proceeds of the HD stream will be going towards a 10,000 dollar Evo college Scholarship annually given to other gamers pursuing degrees in gaming development and technology.
Evo has come a long way since its humble origins in 1995, going from a 40 man tournament in Sunny Dale, California with 2 games (Street Fighter Turbo and Street Fighter Alpha 2) to this modern behemoth of a convention that has been broadcast in the past by the likes of PSN and Spike TV. I encourage readers – especially people who don’t typically play fighting games – to catch a stream this weekend. There is a certain element of excitement (hype) that can be found as you watch two extremely talented players dancing on the razors edge, not knowing who will win, yet cheering on their displays of skill and devotion to something we all love: Videogames.
I will leave you with this video from last year’s Evolution 2011. Hopefully this year there will be many “moments” as well.
