I would be lying through my teeth if I said that I wasn’t a big fan of Kaiju films. While my personal favorite is Gamera, there’s no denying the impact that Godzilla and Co. have left on films, comics, video games… and a couple unlucky buildings in downtown Tokyo.
Over the past decade, Godzilla and some of his giant monster acquaintances have been gracing the video game world in a handful of fighting games. Well now, one of the creative minds behind such titles as Godzilla: Unleashed and Destroy All Monsters, Simon Strange, has decided to throw himself out there to the mercy of crowdfunders to help secure his new studio, Sunstone Games, and their upcoming online multiplayer title, Kaiju Combat.
In similar fashion to the other titles proudly resting in Strange’s stable, Kaiju Combat promises to be a good old fashioned brawler with an extensive cast of everyone’s favorite movie monsters. Unfortunately, the costs of developing the title – plus dealing with Toho’s licensing issues – result in the financial goal of this project being a bit high; $350,000 high to be exact.
The Kickstarter will be running until August 2nd, and in usual fashion if the goal isn’t met, backers of the project will not be charged for their donation. The developers are offering a mix of both high and low rewards, including a simple thank you, a t-shirt, or even designing your own giant monster for the game. A twenty dollar donation will give backers of the game a copy of the finished product once it’s released. The current estimate for launch is in the Spring of 2013.
Extra details can be found at the Kaiju Combat Kickstarter page from the man himself behind the project.
