Dead Space 3 Co-Op Gameplay Demonstrates Big Changes

+

Well, for better or worse, the rumors are true. Dead Space 3 will be have drop-in drop-out co-op, with Isaac fighting necromorphs alongside a new partner, John Carver.

The gameplay shown at E3 had Isaac and Carver fending off an enormous whirling drill. In opposition to Dead Space’s calculating, methodical dismemberment, the duo seem to have left strategy at the door. They freeze the drill to make it easier to shoot the vulnerable drill bit, but beyond that it looks like a total free-for-all.

The gameplay, as well as a look at obvious changes between Dead Space 3 and its predecessors, after the break.

After the drill is dealt with, Isaac and Carver head outside. A little bit of the back-and forth which will be present throughout the game can be heard here, as Carver grumbles, “F*ck this planet.”

Isolation was a huge part of Dead Space 1 and 2, and it could be damaging to the series to constantly have some foul-mouthed partner quipping with Isaac at all turns. Then, Isaac and Carver head outside for one of the biggest shocks of the gameplay demo. They take cover, and start shooting at enemy soldiers. It’s a big surprise, and a real change from the suspenseful and tense mood of prior Dead Space 3 games.

Horror games tend to push vulnerability, and if Isaac has the ability to hide behind a chest-high wall the whole game, it might mark a transition towards a more action-based title.
