First revealed back at the beginning of May, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is getting its first DLC – Dawnguard. Today, the good folks at Bethesda released the first trailer and info for the upcoming DLC, and by all accounts, it seems like it will be worth the wait. Head past the break to check out the trailer as well as our shot by shot analysis.
Let’s get the most important thing out of the way first. Just watch this trailer.
Excited yet? Good. Now let’s get started with the analysis.
New locations? Check. This isolated fortress is the home of a mysterious and secretive group of vampires.
One of the vampires in his human form, though the glowing eyes betray his dark secret.
The stylish and uplifting décor of a vampire fortress. Very warm and welcoming.
This is definitely not the average breed of vampire in Tamriel.
Like any good vampire, you’ll need to feast on blood to maintain your powers.
The source of the vampires’ power perhaps?
The transition from human to demon is not unlike turning into a werewolf, though your vampire form seems to be able to sense the auras of nearby living creatures.
Another spooky new location. These vampires sure like to hang out in cheery places.
The home of the Dawnguard, a group sworn to hunt down and destroy all vampires.
The Dawnguard decorate their fortress a little more sensibly than the vampires.
Dawnguard will introduce crossbows, a weapon sorely lacking from the base game.
It seems crossbows won’t be the only new type of bow and arrow.
Dawnguard’s vampires make Skyrim’s werewolves look fluffy and friendly by comparison.
A new style of one-handed axe for all your Falmer extermination needs.
Taking aim at one of the lesser vampires with the new crossbow.
Another new enemy – we’ll call him a snow giant for now. New killcam animations as well.
These new vampires appear to have the ability to “teleport” by transforming themselves into a flock of bats.
Finally – mounted combat! Some sweet new armor as well.
As if these new vampires didn’t seem powerful and menacing enough already, they appear to possess a powerful new form of telekinesis as well.
A skeletal, flaming horse. Shadowmere, eat your heart out.
There will be at least one new type of dragon. This charming fellow can dive straight through solid ice, then pop up and ambush you.
Sunrise over Dragonsreach will look very different if the vampires have their way.
No specific release date has been announced yet, only that Dawnguard will be coming sometime during the summer, first to Xbox 360, with PC and PS3 versions to follow at a later date. The price point of 1600 MS Points ($20) suggests that there will be a pretty substantial amount of new content as well. Check back for more on Dawnguard as it becomes available.
