With the game releasing in just under a month, Creative Director Suda 51 and Writer James Gunn have teamed up for a video interview detailing the development and purpose of their upcoming game, Lollipop Chainsaw.

From the outset, Suda 51 wanted to create a funny zombie game that wasn’t about senseless violence. “What we wanted to make was a funny zombie game. Something that’s not just about violence or there being buckets of blood.” The idea of Lollipop Chainsaw came to Suda when he imagined a zombie getting its head copped off and having a rainbow appear from the blood.

You can check out the full interview after the break.

James Gunn goes into detail about how they wanted to make the game the most over the top experience ever made and was very clear that they wanted the game to be enjoyed for its extremities. “Our mission from the beginning was to never hold back. Everything was going to be as extreme as possible…if people are gonna like this game, they’re gonna like it because of the extremities and not because we held back.”

Both Suda and Gunn talk about what went into creating the game’s central story and characters. They initially wanted to use the classic “Romeo and Juliet” motif and quickly spread out to the ole, as James Gunn puts it, “Boy meets girl. Girl falls in love. Boy becomes disembodied head” story in which Juliet and Nick go off on an adventure to kill zombies. During this journey, they will find an even deeper love for each other.

Lollipop Chainsaw will be released on June 12th for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
