Have you ever sat back and thought, “I wish League of Legends was a 2D platforming shooter I could play on my PlayStation 3″? Because if so, you have oddly specific desires, and also, you’re in luck. Awesomenauts, a new title developed by Ronimo Games, is bringing its strange MOBA/Contra self to the PlayStation 3, and, if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber, you can get those oddly specific desires fulfilled for free.

Awesomenauts will be the PlayStation Plus game of the month in May, and will be available to download for free throughout the month, starting May 1 in North America. Non-subscribers also can pick it up for $10, or for 800 MSP on XBLA on May 2.

Piki Geek went hands-on with Awesomenauts during PAX, and so far it’s been a thoroughly impressive title.

Awesomenauts is played in 3 vs 3 matches, and allows up to 3 different players to compete on one console using splitscreen. If a team can’t be filled with players, as many as five players can be substituted for AIs, even in the middle of a match. Robin Meijer, Ronimo Games’ producer, boasted on the PlayStation blog that the role of AIs means players can jump into games alone or with friends without ever seeing a lobby.

The gameplay emulates MOBA titles heavily, taking upgrades, creep-droids, stuns and silences, turrets, strategy, and what will be a long roster of playable characters and integrating it all into a 2D space.

Meijer explained that Awesomenauts will not use a complex point-ranking system as many other MOBA games do. Rather, the game will use playtime to assume a player’s level of experience. He also that Ronimo Games has no plans to add more gameplay modes in order to avoid splitting players between those who have purchased a mode in DLC and those who have not.

At launch, Awesomenauts will have six customizable characters to choose from. Ronimo Games also has two more currently in the works, and even more on the way in the future.
