Steampunk sandbox game Dishonored is a new title from Bethesda and Arkane Studios and after being teased in an issue of Game Informer last year, we now know more and have some brief video footage from Gamespot. Players will take on the role of Corvo, an assassin for the fictional monarchy who wields supernatural powers.
Stylistically, the altered-history English city the game takes place in – known as Dunwall – is very reminiscent of the steampunk genre, as it combines classical manners and architecture juxtaposed with powerful technology. The narrative will have you restoring your life and honor after being framed for a traitorous crime. You can see the breadth of the fictional world created by Arkane through this highly-detailed map.
In the new video below, Co-Creative Directors Raphel Colantonio and Harvey Smith outline the powers and abilities available to the protagonist. Some we’ve seen before, like short-range teleportation and time manipulation, but the ability to summon city creatures and possess them is a rather new concept. This even includes leaping into an enemy’s body while plummeting from tremendous heights to avoid damage or stopping time to set-up a distraction to have activate when returning to normal movement.
Colanonio and Smith highlight the verticality within the maps, which were designed by the legendary level artist responsible for Half-Life 2′s City 17, Viktor Antonov. In a separate video from Game Informer, Antonov described the way in which the world will remind players of Valve’s classic title, but has enough identity to stand on its own. Coming from a man with a pedigree including the Combine Tower, there is a lot to look forward to.
