The Fable series has taken a cartoonish turn, literally, with Fable Heroes, a four-player co-operative, arcade style, virtual board game and beat-em-up. The arcade title is intended to let players unlock coins for the upcoming main franchise game, Fable: The Journey. Heroes’s art style is… striking, with big glossy eyes and legs without feet.

Fable Heroes is a fresh spin on the beloved Fable franchise in which up to 4 players play both cooperatively and competitively in this hack-and-slash adventure. Work together as heroes of Albion to defeat familiar foes and new enemies while collecting as many gold coins as possible to unlock upgrades, characters, and items in both this game and Fable: The Journey for Kinect for Xbox 360.

Gameplay suggested by the screenshots includes colorfully-busy beat-em-up combat and minigames, like four-player minecart racing. There are some board game elements clearly featured, but their significance to the overall gameplay is unclear. Is it a minigame of it’s own or is the whole game a board game?

The only element that is very clear is the startling visual direction. Character limbs end in nubs and the nose-less faces seem locked in alarming smiles. Texture edges are comically rounded and the sky looks to be a pair of blue corduroy pants with clouds glued to it. It will certainly stand out from the other games in the series.
