Suda 51 and his team, Grasshopper Manufacture, are known for their eccentric takes on existing genres. Their new title, Sine Mora, is designed to do just that to the world of side-scrolling shoot-em-ups. The game will be available on the Xbox Live Marketplace on March 21, so everyone with an Xbox can dodge lasers and explode in flashy death over and over.
I’m not kidding about the dying part. The game’s newest trailer is nothing more than a montage of players dying in horrific ways. This isn’t too surprising, as frequent reminders of your own mortality are a staple of the genre. But, there’s still hope for those of us not as adept with quick reflexes to colorful storms of lasers. Suda 51 indicated in an interview with Shogun Gamer that their ultimate goal was “to make a shoot’em up which is appealing and accessible to anyone.”
Sine Mora is respecting the genre conventions. It also does everything to appeal to new players. We kept the design within the limits we set for ourselves, while trying to be contemporary.
This was accomplished by creating two extremely varying difficulty settings. Normal goes easy on the player, while Insanity difficulty lives up to both its own name and the expectations of genre fans. A side-by-side comparison video is available to make your decision about where you belong.
Sine Mora will cost 1200 Microsoft points, so you can get your shmup on when it launches in March.
