Skylanders Sequel, Skylanders Giant, Revealed

Skylanders Piki

Activison Blizzard announced today in a press release that Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure, which was the #1 overall new IP launched in North America according to the NPD Group, will be followed-up by Skylanders Giants. Skylanders Giants will introduce eight new figures to collect that are much larger than the original Skylanders cast. Additionally, the game will be backwards compatible with the original Skylanders cast, which means the emotional bonds you’ve formed with your figures can last that much longer.

“Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure’s success in 2011 validated an exciting idea—that with the right technology, and the creative minds to support it with engaging characters and story, we could define a new model for children’s play,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing.

With the success of the game/figure hybrid, I wonder if this is something we’ll see more developer’s attempting to cash-in on in the future? With the Wii U harnessing the power of Near Field Communication, it would be the perfect breeding ground for this exact type of game that merges physical media with digital.

Time will tell if Skylanders will go the way of Guitar Hero, but until then, it seems that there’s no end to Skylander production. I suggest camping outside your local Toys R’ Us now if you want your hands on these extra-large figures.
