Founder of 38 Studios Curt Schilling has offered an apology for the buggy demo of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
I am sure they made the best demo they could, but as a studio packed to the gills with gamers, we refuse to believe code has to be unplayably buggy at launch… So to those that have had a horrid demo experience, I’m sorry, it’s on us, our name is the name on the box we care about.
Accurately conveying the depth and breadth of a 40-300 hour game in a single demo is incredibly difficult. Amalur also doesn’t have the series legacy to ride on like major competitor, Skyrim.
However, it’s not an entirely fruitless fiasco, because as EA predicted, even negative press is positive for sales and advertising of the game. When the studio is in full control, Schilling promised to “set a bar that will be insanely challenging to meet, and continue meeting as long as [38 Studios] is around.”
