When an anticipated new game gets announced, there’s usually precious little information to be had. That can leave eager gamers combing everything they can find for details, and what better source of new intel than a fresh trailer? In the inaugural edition of this new feature, Jeroen dances through Resident Evil 6’s reveal in an effort to shakedown its mysteries.
A lot of people are describing the Resident Evil 6 traileras the ultimate fanservice trailer. It’s not hard to see why, as it’s got everything an RE fan could want: slow tense moments, big action, all your favorite characters, and brand new mysteries and zombies. The trailer is as dense and they come and it’s very easy to miss things here and there.
Hit the jump for a breakdown of the entire trailer, with all the best moments and little secrets you might have missed.
Leon’s back in his first appearance since RE4. He’s seen facing down an unknown opponent. It’s probably a zombie.
The President talks to Leon: “Bio-organic weapons are a global threat… started working with the rest of the world about the Raccoon City incident… showing my desire to reveal the… I’m going to tell them everything and I’ve always valued your friendship Leon.” This is likely Ashley’s father from Resident Evil 4, and he is planning to reveal something hidden about BOW’s at a great risk.
And now he’s a zombie. Leon’s almost pleading with the opponent to remain where they are.
The person the President is actually facing down is Helena Harper, a new character reported by the Escapist. So who was Leon actually talking to? After the standard cut-to-black gunshot, we hear Leon scream, “Mr. President!”
Not only does the new camera style make a return but the long, dark and lonesome corridors that made the series famous are back as well. Leon’s got a brand new, stylish jacket.
We see the ruined town of Tall Oaks as Helena says, “I did this.”
Leon sees some enemies’ shadows on the wall ahead. The lighting and atmosphere indicate a less action-oriented affair than RE5 presented and closer to the tense original games.
Ingrid Hunnigan is back, briefing Leon and Helana on the situation: “90% of the population in Tall Oaks has been infected with the virus. That rounds out to about 70,000 hostiles.” Leon responds, “Yeah, this is Raccoon City all over again.”
Leon’s facing down a very large amount of enemies. It looks like RE6 will be tossing us more bad guys at a time than ever before. Some new zombie tricks include the ability to leap at the player, as the one in green is in the process of doing and is not actually using the zombie in red as leverage. (Note: The graphic quality here is because it’s a motion shot)
Leon’s kick is back as well, affecting all the enemies around him. Can Leon’s new kick make RE6 compete with champion zombie-kicking simulator Dead Island?
A new zombie type: giant obese zombie. He’s seen picking up Leon almost effortlessly in the trailer. No word if he will hug him and pet him and squeeze him and call him George yet.
“Want to tell me what’s in there?” Leon asks. Helena seems to be keeping more than a few secrets.
Chris is seen overlooking a Chinese city. “I can’t keep running away. I have to face the truth, accept responsibility.”
Chris pushes his way past a news camera and civilians on a Chinese street. It seems like he is in some sort of control situation with the BSAA where they’re trying to suppress an outbreak in China. It seems like civilians will also be a major part of the game now as Chris pushes past a man when running by him, much like the protagonist brushes people aside in the Assassin’s Creed games. But I suppose when you’ve got biceps as big as watermelons, your only option is to shove.
Chris breaches through a door with a team of soldiers. Could this mean there are segments of the game where we’ll be fighting alongside numerous allies?
It looks like Los Plagas makes a return as this man’s arm indicates. Or, rather, his lack of arm.
Human enemies and Chris is taking cover by a door with Gears of War style gameplay? These are definitely the bioterrorists mentioned in the Capcom blog.
“Alright, first things first. I want $200,000 up front, another $200,000 when this is over. And BOWs? Those are extra.” This mysterious new character is definitely a capable gun for hire as he lists his prices over a montage of him fighting his way through human enemies with his fists.
This looks to be Alex Wesker, the oft-mentioned but never seen Wesker child. I wouldn’t mind if it was actually HUNK, though. That would be an interesting change. Until we find out who, let’s call him the Stranger. He’s selling things after all. No red eyes, though.
Another new enemy and seemingly a boss type. He’s got a gigantic gun in place of his right hand. Seeing as this is a Capcom game, let’s call him Megaman for now.
Who is he telling his price? None other than Ashley Graham. What is she doing here, hiring an unknown mercenary? She looks much older with shorter hair and a more adult style of dress.
Here we see the Stranger and Ashley being chased by Megaman as they leap through obstacles and across rooftops. This definitely is a Quick-Time Event.
Ashley is seen healing the Stranger, proclaiming, “Not going to let anything happen to you. The world needs you.” Ashley’s tracked down this savior of humanity all by herself and is trying to get him out at all costs. Why is she tasked with this special mission? Gameplay-wise, it looks like Ashley can actually revive the player now too.
“No, no. Not me. Just my blood… Well, the world can have it. If someone ponies up the dough,” the Stranger responds while injecting himself or drawing out blood from his neck. It’s looking more and more likely that this is Alex Wesker.
More team action with Chris. Most interesting is this injection one of the soldiers is taking. Is this some sort of vaccine or treatment for the infected?
After some sort of syringe ball was launched into the midst of the soldiers, we get a glimpse of one mutating into a zombie. So does this mean there’s a new strain of virus that is even more powerful? Could this be what caused the President to share BOW information with the world? Is this why the Stranger’s blood is needed?
“After what she’s done to us… How many of our men are dead because of that bitch?!” the Captain asks Chris. “I’m right there with you, Captain, but your personal vendetta isn’t going to get us anywhere,” Chris replies. Who is the Captain referring to? The Captain is quite clearly Josh Stone from RE5. I really hope the woman they’re speaking about isn’t Sheva.
Chris rushes behind cover and snaps to it exactly like Marcus does in Gears of War but is subsequently snatched back out by this new zombie, who pulls him towards itself. Scorpion, anyone?
Another interesting new gameplay mechanic revealed here. Chris rolls to the side to dodge an attack and starts firing from prone position on the floor.
Leon demonstrates a similar ability where he slides forward past a group and then turns around and opens fire from the floor.
And in the midst of a sea of quick-cut action shots, we get this. A colossal new enemy. Here’s hoping we get to climb him and stab the weak spot.
So, what can we get out of this trailer?
- Three playable characters with partners: Leon and Helena; Chris and soldiers/Captain Josh; and the Stranger and Ashley
- Three different playstyles: Leon’s RE4 style affair; Chris’ Gears of War style action; the Stanger’s melee combat
- Three different locations: Tall Oaks, a small town infested by zombies; Chinese city, where the BSAA is suppressing an outbreak; unknown for the Stranger and Ashley but seems like another Asian location with a cold climate
- Brand new player abilities involving dodging and quickly firing from prone positions
- Vehicular and platforming sections
- Larger mobs of zombies
Resident Evil 6 is expected to release on November 20, 2012 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with a Windows version following sometime later.
