So here’s something I’ll bet none of you have ever thought to yourselves: “Damn, I love Tetris. I’d probably love it even more if I paid a subscription fee for it!” Well, EA has heard your non-existent pleas and has launched the Elite Tetris Fan Club for $2.99 per month, or $29.99 for a year.
The subscription fee is meant to give players access to exclusive content, DLC discounts, speedier leveling in-game, as well as a “Marathon One Touch Mode” and “Tetris Log”, which provides a persistent profile and new challenges. It’s not unlike the Online Pass model that is becoming increasingly popular with big name publishers, yet somehow manages to feel even more exploitative.
Is this really the road that the game industry needs to travel? How long before services like the Elite Tetris Fan Club stop being optional and start showing up as mandatory? It’s a slippery slope, people.

I didn’t expect to see anything even more head-shakingly ridiculous than Call of Duty Elite for at least a few months yet. Thank you, EA, for giving my cynicism a work out.
Damn, EA is now even worse than Activision.
