Say what you want about the Call of Duty franchise, the game sells and sells big. While gaming news had been buzzing over Battlefield 3 for the past few weeks, Modern Warfare 3 proceeded to set several records out of the gate.
Within five days, Modern Warfare 3 made $775 Million world wide – with nearly half those sales being made within the first 24hrs of launch – and set a record on XBox Live with 3.3 million unique users in a 24hr period, beating out the previous record held by Modern Warfare 2.
That’s not to say the previous CODs aren’t still getting their fair share of game time still, according to Activision CEO Bobby Kotick:
Online play for Modern Warfare 3 is at record levels and we continue to see high online play for both Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which ranked as the #2 and #4 top-played Xbox LIVE games for the week of November 7, according to Major Nelson.
So $775 Million in sales- before major holiday purchases start. It’s safe to say we’ll be seeing that sales figure climb quite a bit more in the weeks to come.
