If you’re to believe a recent ESRB listing – and let’s be honest here, of course you are – then you’re in for quite the Halloween treat. The first entry in the long-neglected Darkstalkers series looks to be set for a release through the PlayStation Network for the PlayStation 3 and PSP, giving fans another chance to experience Capcom’s vampire-themed fighter.
Darkstalkers originally saw release in Japanese arcades in 1994. It would be two years later before North America would get their hands on the game in the form of a port to the PlayStation. The game would go on to inspire two sequels, a manga series, a four-episode anime OVA, and an animated series best left forgotten.
With the recent resurgence of 2D fighters as of late, discussion is abounding that this might be the harbinger of a return for the Darkstalkers series with a new entry. With the inclusion of characters from the franchise in recent crossover fighters like Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and Marvel vs. Capcom 3, we can keep our fingers crossed that we’ll soon be returning to Darkstaker’s stylistically gothic take on the fighting genre sometime sooner rather than later.
