Uncharted 3 Brings Harrison Ford Onboard for Awkward Video

When it comes to action heroes, Harrison Ford is the absolute mac daddy. When it comes to video games, the Uncharted series is pretty much the pinnacle of action adventure gaming. So, what would happen if you put the two together? Surely the greatest piece of advertising for the upcoming Uncharted 3! A marketer’s wet dream!

This, at least was the original idea of Sony Japan, as they miraculously got hold of a real life Harrison Ford and put him in front of a camera to play Uncharted 3.

The result? Well, very very awkward… I don’t think Harrison Ford plays many video games…

It is an odd video. Nintendo had all those bearded Robin Williams adverts for the release of Zelda on the 3DS, but then Williams is generally known to be an avid gamer. Harrison Ford, by contrast, is a man’s man, one who can pilot planes and helicopters – he doesn’t waste his time with such frivolities like video games! We’re talking about a guy who, when he’s not saving the world in movies, is saving stranded hikers via helicopter. The guy’s a real life hero!

So it’s a little strange to see him sit down to play a video game. I’m not sure how much he was paid to be there, but there is something warming in seeing him show signs of actual happiness and wonder at how far games have come. At the same time, there is also something quite sad about it. I guess it’s seeing an aging actor whose glory days are, lets be honest, far behind him, and how he is forced to sit in front of a camera like a monkey to play an interactive throwback to some of his (and his stunt double Vic Armstrong’s) best work. 

Still, I can’t help but think this video would have been great, so long as he said, “Get off my plane!”, during the plane fight sequence. I mean c’mon! It’s a no-brainer! 

Having said that, I am a big fan of Uncharted and I’m practically BFFs with Nolan North as well. Even after the Subway advert and the online passes, I simply cannot wait for this game to come out, because playing Uncharted is a superior experience to actually sitting down to watch an action movie… Even if you do have to question Nathan Drake’s moral well being, as he murders literally hundreds of mercenaries, yet still maintains his loveable roguish sense of humor and charm with Elena. 

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception is out for the PlayStation3 on November 1st
