It’s been teased, rumored, and even leaked by Mojang for the past few months, but today you finally have a good reason to dump the cloying significant other in your life: Minecraft beta version 1.8, also known as the “Adventure Update”, is officially live. As if gamers needed more distractions from sleeping, eating, and bathing, the new update that has been hyped for the past few months is finally, officially out.

And it’s as freaking huge as you thought it would be. According to a June 28th post on his blog, creator Markus “Notch” Persson notes, “The update is pretty big, and will change a lot of how Minecraft is played, focusing on making exploration and combat much more rewarding, and bringing in a bigger sense of adventure to the game.”

Remember how before you would just wander around the procedurally generated world aimlessly taking in the incredible sites? Well now you actually have multiple reasons to do it, giving you yet another excuse to procrastinate from building the giant 128 block high Piki Geek logo. Seriously… why haven’t you guys built that yet?

The update comes after Mojang “leaked” two pre-release versions of the update this past weekend, allowing them to fix a slew of bugs prior to the official release. For the most part, the update has released with relatively few glaring, game destroying bugs (in fact, none that I can find), and on the flip side offers a ton of new features, including:

  • Creative Mode
  • Pig Snouts
  • Nine New Crafting Recipes
  • Three New Mobs
  • NPC Villages
  • Strongholds
  • Ravines
  • Rivers
  • Oceans
  • Revamped Combat System
  • Revamped Food System
  • A Stamina Bar
  • Five New Biomes

And a bucketload of more stuff. Check here for a full list of reasons to be alone in a dark room for hours features and go get adventuring!

I totally skipped my classes today, just to play this update xD. Is anyone aware of what leveling up does though? I still can’t figure it out.

Experience doesn’t really do anything other than move the little bar right now. Should be worth something in 1.9

Beautiful stuff. I love how Notch’s use of a long term Beta status of the game has enabled him to reinvent it whenever he wants. It’s product development collaboration with the users on an unprecedented scale.
