Earlier today, Mojang’s own Markus “Notch” Persson stopped by PAX to drop some information and demo the newest features of Minecraft’s 1.8 update, also known as the “Adventure Update.”
The adventure update is set to be one of the larger and more substantial updates, featuring new game mechanics and enemies.
During the live demo, Notch mentioned that he was in part inspired by an unlikely source: Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
He stated that the game’s use of dragging the mouse to interact the world intrigued him, which provided inspiration when creating the new enemies: the Endermen.
According to Notch, the Endermen are rare, Creeper-like enemies that come out at night, and will cause massive damage to the player – only if the player’s crosshair is not aimed on them. If you keep your eyes on them, you will be fine, but if you look away from them, the speedy Endermen will turn you into mincemeat.
It’s an interesting concept, but due to the scarceness of the Endermen, we weren’t able to see any during the live gameplay demo. Other, less scarce additions are the inclusion of villages to the game world.
Villages and towns will now randomly appear in the game world, and include buildings and homes of varying shapes and sizes. No NPC’s seemed to appear in the villages, other than a few stray sheep. Notch also briefly mentioned that the adventure update would include an experience system, and a new food consumption mechanic.
Also included in the update is the creative mode, which is available for free in the classic version of Minecraft. The newly bundled creative mode allows for the player to fly and hover around the world, which proves to be very useful for creating structures and buildings.
While only a brief hint of what is to come was shown, it was undeniably Minecraft. The new update still looks like it will foster the creation and exploration that Minecraft has come to been known for, while also adding a slightly more structured, progression based mode, with the inclusion of experience and new enemies.
Notch said that the adventure update would most likely be released in two parts, the first of which stated to drop sometime shortly after this weekend’s PAX.

hate to burst amnesia’s bubble, but the enderman idea comes from slenderman, no two ways about it. and as for the creative mode, thank goodnesss for that, now i dont have to update my mods evertime the game updates.
When they mentioned the inspiration from Amnesia, they’re referring to having the reticule over the Endermen being what activates their hostile mode. In Amnesia, looking at a monster will likely cause it to attack you. Thus is the inspiration.
He mention what will be in each half of the update?
Notch didn’t mention what would be included in part one.u money is on the creative mode, however; it would require much less tinkering and fine-tuning than the adventure mode.
I wouldn’t mind only getting the creative update, I would love for all the blocks to be available to me, and to make super awesome structors!
. Is there supposed to be a great update for the full release of the game though??
hate to burst your bubble, but they did not come from Slenderman, fans just named them after him because of how he looks and the name stuck.
actually hate to burst your buuble notch came up with it he was goin to anem then far landers but he had a poll and more ppl liked enderman know your info before psoting untrue comment.
Uhhhh dude are you a moron?
The buzz on twitter says Notch wants to drop 1.8 next week!!
I’m hoping this is true. So much updated at once can only mean lots and lots of bugs. He can add the rest of the stuff later.
Awesome!!!
