Notch Watches Too Much Game of Thrones, Demands Trial by Quake 3

07

Tyrion

As has been reported ad naseaum at this point, Notch and Bethesda aren’t exactly the best of friends at the moment. Up until this point, Notch has handled the trademark issue well, but today’s announcement from Notch on his blog shows just how serious the name of his next game is to him.

While directly referencing the episode of Game of Thrones where Tyrion (the shorter guy, for the uninitiated) demands a trial by combat, Notch has thrown his 8-bit gauntlet down in the finest tradition of gamers and challenged Bethesda to a duel to decide on the usage of the word Scrolls.

A duel in Quake 3.

Notch’s plan pits Mojang’s three best Quake 3 players against Bethesda’s best Quake 3 players in a contest to decide the fate of the word “Scrolls.” If Mojang wins, the game will be called Scrolls and Bethesda will drop their lawsuit, and if they lose, they’ll change Scrolls to something more agreeable to Bethesda.

No word yet on whether or not Bethesda will accept the challenge, but they’d sure save themselves a hell of a lot of money in lawyer’s fees if they did.

I read this earlier today and seriously laughed out loud… until I saw the last statement of the address. If Bethesda doesn’t accept this challenge, I will lose A LOT of respect for them.

Let’s settle our differences like we used to, with guns blazing. Both companies don’t want to be in this lawsuit, so this is a REALLY clever way to get out of it, and make it fair at the same time. Kudos to you, Notch. You never cease to impress and amaze me =)

I think this is a perfectly legitimate way to solve a legal dispute. Tort law is bloated and expensive, Notch just wants to solve the problem clean and elegantly. Dudes got a pair, amirite?

Calm down tiger. He merely suggested it. It’s okay to offer alternative solutions to a problem.

      Btw, Detroit sucks.

… he’s in the gaming business. Do you remember when ICE rolled dice to distribute its copyrights? (one got opensourced, I believe). I think it’s marketing genius — the more attention, the better.

Do not a lot of cash to buy a building? Don’t worry, just because it is real to receive the loans to resolve such kind of problems. Therefore get a short term loan to buy all you want.
