When Risen was released in 2009, it found a devoted following despite unremarkable sales. Developer Piranha Bytes is attempting to gain more traction with the sequel, Risen 2: Dark Waters, by including the original game’s most popular elements in a new, unique pirate setting.
In preparation for this month’s GamesCon in Germany, Piranha Bytes has released a teaser trailer for the game, showing the first glimpse of Risen 2′s gameplay. Check it out after the break.
While the trailer clocks in just under a minute and a half, it manages to convey the game’s story, showing off the environment and tone in the process. The video shows that the game, just like the original, deals with a nameless hero fighting and killing various monsters and demons who have risen from the earth.
If Risen 2 maintains the fantastic exploration based gameplay of the original, while successfully implementing the fresh new coat of paint in the form of pirates and black powder, Piranha Bytes may have a real contender on their hands.
Risen 2 is expected to release in early 2012 for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

This seems like a really nice setting. I loved the non-linearity of the first. Maybe by using a pirate setting, they can add sea travel to the mix.
