Valve Internally Testing New Matchmaking System for DotA 2

As someone who considers himself a fan of the MOBA* genre, I try to follow anything coming out of the scene. I’ve heard rumors of certain competitive members of the Heroes of Newerth competitive community possessing beta access to DotA 2, but that’s only second-hand notions and hints. It seems somewhat unlikely after reading a statement made by Valve on their Twitter, saying that they are currently “internally testing some social things and DotA 2 will test a complete new match making system we might see.”

Looks like Valve is trying to create a matchmaking system on par with other games like Heroes of Newerth or League of Legends. As far as improvements or skill benchmarking, I’d like to see some brackets not entirely based off of a ladder system that can be easily gamed. The term “smurfing” has become all too common these days as people continue to make accounts just to crush the poor newbies.

As my hopes and dreams remain high for DotA 2, I’ll try to remain a bit calmer as it’s rumored to have a showing at gamescom next month as well as an autumn release.

*Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, or MOBA, is the acronym given to games based off of the Defense of the Ancients Map/Mod from Warcraft 3. Apparently Riot Games, the developers behind League of Legends are credited for coining the term, although, I’m not entirely sure of the legitimacy behind that.

Actually, it’s based off a map for the original Starcraft called Aeon of Strife :P

Just thought I’d throw that out there.

I like how Valve keeps experimenting. Not showing or telling us almost anything about the game until it’s a month or two from release (possibly) is an interesting approach. Let’s see how it all turn out then, shall we? ;D
