Just last week, the fine folks at Radical Entertainment unveiled a trailer displaying all of the new powers and other ways to cause destruction in the upcoming Prototype 2. Today, a new trailer has been unveiled that makes a 180 degree turn and attempts to convey the gravity of the situation, finally explaining why the new protagonist, Sergent James Heller, has it in for Alex Mercer (the “hero” of the original).
As much fun as Prototype was, it failed to show any real depth. It was about as much fun as you can have blowing up items in a sandbox environment, but they never made the player genuinely care about any of the characters, or even the mayhem that was caused by the viral outbreak. This trailer seems to point to story and depth being a much larger focus in Prototype 2, as Heller’s family has been killed during the panic and he believes it’s all due to Alex Mercer’s involvement, and the truth is… Heller is right.

It was already looking like an interesting sequel when it was originally announced that Heller would be the playable character, out for revenge, but with this new trailer, it further adds to the complicated dynamic that they are seemingly try to build for the sequel.
I might be getting overly optimistic, and reading into things I shouldn’t, but at this point it’s hard to get me any more excited for this 2012 release.
