If you love Bungie and you have an iPad, you’re in luck. To celebrate what is commonly known as Bungie Day or 07/07, you can grab Marathon for free on the iPad.
For those of you who aren’t fluent in the ways of Bungie, Marathon was Bungie’s first foray into FPS released in 1994 for Mac and is commonly thought to be the unnamed forerunner to the Halo series. The journey of Marathon to the iPad has been over a decade in the making. It totally could be set to music with a cheesy script and inspirational music. The Lifetime network would run that all day, I bet.
Just before Bungie’s acquisition by Microsoft back in 2000, they released the Marathon engine code to the public which became Aleph One. Come 2005, Bungie one upped that and released all of the Marathon material to be free to the public. Fast forward to earlier this year when a member of Touch Arcade Daniel Blezek (“vidmaster”) revealed in a Touch Arcade forum that he was working on porting Marathon over to iOS. While fans loved the idea, they worried that Bungie might nix it – similar to how Sega stopped a fan remake of Streets of Rage. Only this past June did Bungie unveil a blog post interviewing Blezek, officially giving him their blessings to make the iPad port a reality.
Ordinarily I would write a review for this game, but quite honestly, you’d be best served downloading it for free and seeing for yourself. On the off chance you find it too infuriatingly difficult, there’s always the $.99 in app option of “Master Chief Mode” – a glorified cheat mode that unlocks everything, grants all weapons and makes you invulnerable. So if you have an iPad, and a wifi connection, there’s no excuse for you to not experience a bit of Bungie history for FREE. DID I MENTION IT’S FREE?

for a second i thought this was a retro style halo mod. considering that is the exact same rifle from combat evolved.
That’s what I thought too. It’s nice to know that my favorite weapon from the first Halo is a throwback to something even more ancient.
