Every time we hear more news about Anarchy Reigns, Platinum Games’ sequel to their critically acclaimed but commercial failure Madworld, two things happen: First, we get both excited and worried, because despite how great Madworld was, Sega would probably like to see some decent sale numbers in the sequel. Second, we usually have to question if Platinum Games understands the meaning of the word “anarchy”. Even the title doesn’t really make sense when you think about it. Of course, if Anarchy Reigns is as awesome as Madworld, they can call it Babycakes Magoo for all we care.
The latest news from this week’s issue of Famitsu is no different, as they revealed that there will be two different story sections: Whiteside and Blackside, which you can play in whichever order you desire. In the Whiteside story, you will play as spec-ops turned Bureau of Public Safety agent Leo Victorion, and will work alongside Sasha and Nikolai to “solve” a series of murders. And by “solve”, we mean kill the suspect. This sounds more like a heavy-handed authoritarian government than anarchy to me, but hey, what do we know? Along the way, they’ll run into Madworld star Jack Cayman, though whether that’s as friend or foe is not really clear.
In the Blackside story you’ll play as Jack, the former marine with a chainsaw built into his arm. While they didn’t reveal much about this side of the story, it doesn’t look like there’s going to be much diplomacy when you have a character with a chainsaw built into their arm.
We’ve also learned about two different multiplayer modes: Battle Royal, which is pretty much just your normal death match, and then Survival which will have three humans fighting off AI-controlled masses a la Firefight in Halo or Horde in GoW. It’s exciting to read about a Madworld game with real multiplayer, the only thing that was really missing from the original.
