Terraria – One Part Minecraft, Two Parts Metroidvania

04

Metroidvania-craft. Or something.

Who doesn’t love a good 2D adventure game? From the classic vampire whipping action of Castlevania to the maze like exploration of Metroid, 2D adventure titles can offer a really tight, focused experience. While mainstream console games are currently all about the third dimension, a number of excellent indie titles have proved that the genre isn’t dead, Cave Story and Spelunky being shining examples. Terraria is now set to continue this indie success trend, by combining the procedural creation of Spelunky with world creation and 4 player co-op multiplayer, creating a 2D Minecraft-like experience.

Check out the trailer after the jump.

The game is still under development and a price is not yet set, but it most likely will be in the same range as other indie hits. The game will also support PvP and team PvP, which brings hope for some fort building/raiding action. Currently, Terraria is only slated for release on windows, but development could move into porting into other platforms if the game is a success. Interesting… I’m always done for a good PC game to play from time to time. Is this just going to be an action game with building elements, or is it more in the vein of a RPG or something?

any game that tries to copy minecraft (like fortresscraft) leaves a bad taste in my mouth so im hoping this brings alot of new innovative things to the table, besides a 2-D experience. Watching this video has perked my interest.

Looks interesting, definitely more a Spelunky feel than Minecraft (which I appreciate)

Looks promising. I’d definitely play a demo.
