The lifeblood of any long-lasting multiplayer FPS is its modding community. Valve’s early and continued support of modders gave rise to successful commercial releases like Counter Strike and Day of Defeat. New community maps, weapons, and the ever-important hats drive continued Team Fortress 2 development, and many new ideas in the industry spring forth from small mod development teams.
Knowing full well the potential benefits, Treyarch is attempting to tap into its community by releasing mod tools for the PC version on Call of Duty: Black Ops. The announcement, which came via Josh Olin’s Twitter page, states that PC owners should expect the tools to arrive sometime in May. Details on what the tools will be able to do are not available yet, but previous statements indicate it will be “non-trivial”. Console owners should not expect to be able to access any of the mod content, as is the case with most multiplatform games with PC counterparts.
