DNF Creeps Us Out With New Trailer

08

xuU0y

I’m just going to go ahead and say it, Gearbox is trolling us. This latest abomination of a marketing strategy, featuring creepy looking plastic women with loose morals dancing about the screen for your – ahem – entertainment, is about the least subtle attempt at controversy since Mein Kampf. Surely no one who worked on the newest Duke could be that stupid. Surely?

Continue reading, check out the trailer, and make up your own mind as to Gearbox’s level of intelligence.

Aside from questions of sincerity and the possible disappearance of all higher brain functions from Plano, Texas, I wanted to make to make one other point about this trailer. It’s freaking terrible. As an attempt at satire it fails miserably, as I’m not entirely sure what DNF is even meant to be mocking anymore. The game has rocketed well past satire and crash landed firmly into self parody. And as a trailer taken purely on the basis of its own merits… am I buying a game or a $60 softcore porno?

We – that is to say PikiGeek – are working on a roundtable discussion on the issue of Duke Nukem Forever and whether or not any of us are even excited for it anymore. Suffice to say that this latest “attempt” at marketing has colored many of our opinions to the negative shades of emotion, and many of us now express concern that regardless of whatever good game might lurk underneath the surface of DNF, the surface has become so perverse and distracting that it taints said game.

How about you, Mr. Reader? Still have plans to purchase Duke after today? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

As a trailer; it’s rather weak; you don’t see any real gameplay outside of the womanizing (which I guess has been a gameplay element since D3D).

Has the recent marketing changed my idea on what this game will be? No; if you didn’t realize DNF was going to be puerile and sexist, I’d wonder where you had been the last 10+ years. It’s pandering to a particular audience after all.

Do I think the game is taking it too a level where the game is severely hurt by it? Not yet, but it’s getting close. We really won’t know how much of this is present in the game until it’s released – remember, much was made about the strippers in D3D, but they amounted it little more than a thing of excitement for 13 year olds.

It’s controversial but Postal 2 this is not. From what it appears, it’s no worse than the usual action flick; except that this possibly has more feces.

That all being said; I wasn’t planing on purchasing it anyway. I grew out of the Duke franchise many moons ago; this sort of humor no longer amuses me in the slightest, but it certainly doesn’t offend me.

If it actually ends up being a great game, I’ll probably pick it up. From what I’ve seen and read about it so far, the game is definitely looking terrible and this trailer is really making me hate its aesthetics and style, everything really does look plastic and unreal.

I’ll end up picking this up eventually but I doubt it will be anything more than an average shooter. I wouldn’t mind to be proven wrong though.

It went from Balls to Regular to Rental. Duke’s been screwed. I’ll just buy LA Noire, Brink, and Skyrim.

I like your website, because I can access it from work, but this nonstop hate on DNF is a little sickening. Is this a Christian Science video game site? Somehow I doubt that. I don’t see anything tragic for the game in this trailer, and it didn’t change my opinion of the game in the least. There are two things developers are aware of that will boost sales of a game, and sex and violence are those things. I think you as a website need to crawl out from under the rock where you’re living and be a little more open minded. I mean, Jesus Christ.

As an Amish American, I find games like this deplorable. In my day, we we lucky to see a woman’s ankle, and we were damn glad when we did. You kids and your three-dimensional realistic video games. I have to make do with the racier parts of the bible, and that suits me just fine. Yet every day I have to listen to this crap about DNF or Bulletstorm or Crysis or whatever. I can hardly churn a quart of butter without hearing about this nonsense, and those who work on or purchase it should be ashamed. Enjoy your savagery and harlotry. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some horses to shoe.
