Is Diablo 3 the WoW Killer?

While there are many who are looking to games like Star Wars: The Old Republic or Blizzard’s own upcoming MMO, “Titan” to dethrone World of Warcraft, Blizzard’s cofounder and EVP of product development Frank Pearce seems to think it might actually be Diablo 3 that accomplishes the task.

When asked by Gamasutra if he thinks Titan will cannibalize WoW subscribers upon its release, Pearce stated, “It’s hard to say. I think even a shorter-term concern is whether or not we might see cannibalization of WoW players from Diablo III when we launch it, because it’s a similar type of experience. Not exactly similar, but it’s that RPG feel.”

Pearce continues, “it’s better we cannibalize them ourselves than let someone else do that, because if we cannibalize them ourselves, they’re still a Blizzard customer.”  I can’t say I disagree with his logic, but I’ve never felt like Diablo was a similar experience to World of Warcraft.  Unless, of course, there are drastic, heartbreaking changes coming to Diablo 3 that have yet to be revealed.

Also, to state the obvious, Diablo 3 still has no release date.

I don’t know, but if Diablo 3 feels anything like WoW, I’m going to be an unhappy guy.

I think it’s just his way of saying that people will want to spend A LOT of time on this game, so they won’t have time to go and play any other game, and since WoW requires a monthly fee, they might as well drop their subscription so they don’t waste money.

I’m sure the gameplay we know and love will return in this installment of the game, no reason to worry!

Why does he like the word “cannibalize” so much?

I don’t think anything can kill WoW, really. All that Blizzard need to do is keep grinding out quality expansions and they’re set.

…Because Blizzard is totally trying to kill their own MMO. Lol.

No Way! the thing that was so compelling about diablo 1 and 2 was the fact that it was easy to pick up and easy to finish there were a few features for the hardcore crowd but it didn’t have the “wow this is huge” moments wow had. The only game I can think of that can have any massive impact is guild wars 2. Why? it is the only game(mmo) where they actually attempting to make the world feel more alive than compared to anyone else. They are moving away from needing tanks, healers, and so forth. ArenaNet is actually trying to do something new rather than rehash and clone wow. That is the only game I can think of right now that will look as grand as wow but refreshing at the same time. If they take the same approach to their skill system (which looks like they are) they will from the ground up be separating pvp from pve and the end result is that they can balance the game for pvp crowd and cater to the pve crowd without worrying about juggling stats for classes like they are in WoW. WoW right now is always nerf this buff that every god dam patch. Which completely fucks PvP or completely fucks PvE take your pick.
