Portal 2 Designers Comment on GameStop Pre-Order Bonuses

Earlier we posted a story relating to Valve Software’s much anticipated sequel to the game Portal. In it we interviewed lead designer Josh Weier and writer Erik Wolfpaw who gave us interesting details about the forthcoming game. Check out the story to find out more.

In addition to this we were able to ask a few questions about pre-order bonuses for Portal 2.  Bonuses like these have drawn a fair degree of criticism from some gamers over the perception that the average consumer is not being given full access to a game.  Perhaps no one has received more criticism for these actions than GameStop.  Predictably then, when it was announced that Valve had teamed up with GameStop to offer exclusive bonuses to gamers who pre-order Portal 2, it sparked a mild controversy.

Thus it gives us great pleasure to help assuage those fears a little with news straight from the horse’s mouth.  Similar to the system implemented in Left 4 Dead 2, any bonus that one player has gotten as a result of GameStop is automatically shared with whoever he or she plays with regardless of whether the other player has the bonuses themselves. As designer Josh Weier put it to our interviewer;

“I will go on record as saying this, and everybody back at the office can yell at me, but I’m pretty sure that the way we do that if you’re playing co-op with your buddy and you have the rollcage they’ll have the rollcage as well… It was fun in L4D2 when you jumped into a server and everybody got the bat, so we really like that approach”

So no matter who you play with in online co-op mode, and if the footage we showed earlier is anything to go by you will be spending the vast majority of your time in this mode, the experience will be the same for both parties.

There you internet gaming fans, the evil empire of GameStop just threw you a bone.  But feel free to tell us in the comments how wrong we are and how GameStop is still evil and bonuses are a pile of shit.  We welcome your opinions.

    Do you get the rollcage permanently or just when you are playing with someone who pre-ordered from GameStop?

    It also doesn’t sound like GameStop is throwing us a bone, but Valve rather, which is more expected.

    GameStop is still evil and bonuses are a pile of shit. :)

      Sorry, should have clarified that. It’s only when your playing with someone else who has the rollcage. You don’t keep it afterwards.

      Giving it permanently is a good idea, possible after a set amount of time after the release. This way people who don’t have it will eventually get it cause it can keep spreading.

    But, GameStop is still evil and bonuses are a pile of shit.
