A few months ago, Blizzard quietly let it slip that they were working on a new MMO that was going by the name “Titan”. While little else was known, there was speculation that it was a sequel or successor to World of Warcraft, or that it was a Starcraft or Diablo MMO. Well, in a typical Blizzard move, CEO Michael Morhaime neither confirmed nor denied these rumors in his recent interview.
What Morhaime does say is that there are veteran WoW developers on the project, and that they are “not trying to make a WoW sequel”, but that they will coexist. The most interesting tidbit from the interview is Morhaime’s reference to Titan being “two MMORPGs that will co-exist”, with a battle and questing area and a social area. Now this is all fine and dandy, I don’t mind additional social features in an MMO, but the statement that one game will be two kind of scares me. Does this mean we’ll have two subscription fees, or two different games to buy? While I like to think that Blizzard has more sense and loyalty to its fan base to do that, Activision is a strict task master, and will undoubtedly milk Titan for everything it can get.
