After constant rumors and leaks, Sony Ericsson has finally confirmed the Xperia Play, previously known as the PlayStaiton Phone or PSP Phone. Sony is set to give the device a proper introduction at an event on February 13 at 18:00 GMT.
Proclaiming “Android is ready to play”, Sony’s announcement on Facebook coincided with a creepy Super Bowl ad for the device. It’s expected that the Xperia Play will be the first phone to launch with Sony’s “PlayStation Suite” software, which allows gamers to run PS1 games on their Android phones. Other games specifically built for PlayStation Suite will also be appearing on the platform.
Sony’s Xperia Play comes ahead of the 2011 Mobile World Congress, where the new phone is expected to be strutting its stuff.

While many people have simply written off the PlayStation phone, I for one am hyped for it. I find myself in situations when a truly portable device would be great to have, notably while I wait for my girlfriend to get dressed or shopping. It’d be nice to simply whip out my phone and play some games while I wait. No more of this touch-screen control emulation.
