While the majority of gamers right now are probably playing Call of Duty: Black Ops as we speak, and are only reading this because they needed to stop to eat, some are already looking ahead to the next game in the COD franchise. We already know that upstart developer Sledgehammer Games is creating the next installment of the popular Call of Duty series, and according to a recent Gamasutra article, “industry sources say Sledgehammer’s Call of Duty will be set in the future and feature, for lack of a better term, space Marines”.
This would be a huge change for a franchise that has prided itself on history and realism, but it wouldn’t be completely unexpected. Activision has previously stated that the new COD will “broaden the audience” and be an “innovate take” on the series. Additionally, Activision locked up the rights to the names “Call of Duty Space Warfare” among other futuristic-sounding titles back in May. While it has been confirmed that the next COD will be an FPS, nothing else has officially been confirmed. Perhaps lovers of Halo and Call of Duty will find their way to the same game at last.
